My favorite thing this week: is a little 4″ Lenox vase I purchased at the flea market last weekend for $2. I slipped in a few blossoms of greek oregano and some dainty roses from the garden. Priceless!

Have a blessed day and stay well my friend!

Happy Monday

When I planted my first herb garden this past spring my original thought was culinary, for spicing up a few dishes, and salads. Fresh herbs deliver a stronger spicier taste than bottled dried spice, and their, easy and fun to grow.  Over the summer I’ve snipped here and there through the different varieties of thyme, basil, oregano, mint, and a few others for tea. Surprisingly, I didn’t expect the dainty flowering foliage towards the end of the season to be so full of beauty when set in a small size vase.

Happy Monday! Have a great week and stay well my friend!

A Fireball of Color

Yesterdays long over due rain shower left this gorgeous deep red daylily for me this morning. It’s such a beautiful deep ruby red color peeking up to the sun standing tall and proud next to two yellow daylilies. I’m hoping the other two on the same stem bloom within the next couple of days those should be red as well. The other I’m not sure of the color yet but I’m, sure it will be just as pretty.

A neighbor had given me the bulbs last fall when he was separating bulbs from his own garden, so the colors have all been a pleasant surprise until they actually bloom. Last week a few yellow blossomed. Sadly, they fade away only after a day. Apparently that is the where/why the name Daylily.

Next year I’ll clip them and bring them in the house to enjoy if only for the day!

From your garden of dreams many things will blossom- unknown

Planted next to the Daylily are 3’ tall yellow flowers {heliopsis hellanthlodes venus} resembling miniature sunflowers attracting a group of small colored butterflies that blend right in with the color of the flower. I’m hoping a few Hummingbirds stop by as well!

Have a great week and stay well my friend!

Sweet Smell of Home

I’ve been itching to get outside in the sunshine and start the vegetable garden, but it’s still a bit early. This year I’ve wanted to add a few herbs to the garden. So today I headed out to the garden center and picked up a few to start. I came home with cilantro, Greek oregano, English thyme, golden lemon thyme, peppermint, red onion, chives and scallions. Every new week the nursery brings out a few more herbs, so I’ll stop back next week to see what they have.

While driving home the aroma of the mix filled the car reminding me of many childhood memories when our backyard gardens were the center of our everyday life. Like snapped stalks of tart rhubarb dipped in sugar, cucumbers drizzled with vinegar, salt, and pepper. My dad was always out working the garden, and you’d find Ma in the kitchen cooking, and stuffing the old Ball glass canning jars that she would tightly cap off with a chunk of wax before placing them in the pressure-cooker. Canning pickled relish, tomatoes, and beans to blackberry jam, loading the pantry shelves for the winter months. The pickled aroma was the sweet smell of home.
